EXTEN strengthens the fight against bacteria
In addition to EN 13795 careful compliance, how can a laminate manufacturer bring added value and further contribution to keep bacteria and microbes under control in order to reduce the risk of healthcare-related infections and to improve protection from patient to staff?
It is well known since the early 20th century that Silver is a powerful antibacterial metal ion; EXTEN SA decided to invest in the research and improvement of its cast co-extruded polyolefinic film for the production of medical laminates, applying the use of an innovative formulation, based on Silver Ions, combined with an exclusive co-extrusion technology.
Based on ISO 20743 2007 (Part 2:transfer method) EXTEN SA determined the effectiveness of its Antibacterial Antistatic Multilayer Co-extruded Cast Embossed Polyolefinic film.
Results are the following:
- Staphylococcus Aureus Log CFU 0.10, whereas on a sample of 100% cotton it is commonly found a value of 2,3 Log CFU
- Kledsiella Pneumoniae Log CFU 0.00, whereas on a sample of 100% cotton it is commonly found a value of 4,4 Log CFU]
It is clear that EXTEN antibacterial film inhibits bacteria cells division and interrupt cell energy generation in order to inhibit transport functions in the bacteria cell wall. Silver ions provide new ionised Silver molecules with a consequent permanent antibacterial effectiveness. Silver gives plenty of advantages while fighting against methicillin- or multidrug- resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) that has developed resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics which include the peniccillins and the cephalosporins. MRSA is especially troublesome in hospitals where patients with open wounds, invasive devices and weakened immune systems are to greater risk of HCAI.
EXTEN SA product EMFR-AM is a pragmatic contribution to a more intensive and aggressive response to uphold the EN 13795 standard and keep bacteria under a more effective control.
We believe that safety comes first and we believe that supporting EN 13795 we support our safety, because actions are needed not just words.
